ABOUT US

To improve the physical, psychological and social well being of the residents of the Southeast Los Angeles and San Bernardino Counties.

HISTORY
In 1964, Steelworkers Oldtimers Foundation was established as a non-profit organization after a group of retired steelworkers, who dubbed themselves the “Old Timers Club” began providing home maintenance services to retired steelworkers and their spouses in the San Bernardino area. The group was recently overwhelmed upon learning that a widow of one of their clubmembers lost her home in an electrical-related fire and almost lost her life. Any one of them could have performed the simple repair work that could have prevented such a tragedy. Shortly thereafter, Steelworkers Oldtimers opened the first Senior Center in the Inland Empire and pioneered the first senior lunch program there, which included home delivered meals. Initially, through a partnership with United Way, the program was entirely funded through donations from Steelworkers working at Kaiser Steel Mill and other nearbyfactories. After the passage of the Older Americans Act, Oldtimers began receiving federal funding in the 1970s and continues to do so today. In 1977, Oldtimers Foundation extended its services to the Southeast communities of Los Angeles by opening the fist Senior Center in the City of South Gate, providing meals and much needed services. Oldtimers also initiated the first Senior Dial-a-Ride in the area which has grown to serve seniors in the Cities of Huntington Park, Cudahy, Bell, Artesia and South Gate today. The steel and manufacturing industries have since moved away from Fontana and the Southeast communities of LA County, but Oldtimers Foundation remains and continues to provide much needed services to the changing demographics of our surrounding communities.
